EQ Pres wants legislation to prevent unnecessary moving requests

TAYLORSVILLE - An Elder's Quorum president in the Taylorsville 9th ward of the LaDaSa church wants to introduce legislation to the ward council that would prevent unnecessary moving requests from being sent to his quorum. Christopher Scott, EQ president for the past six months, has decided that when it comes to moving people enough is enough.

"I completely understand that there are those who truly have a need when it comes to moving in or out of a house or apartment," President Scott said. "The trouble arises when we feel we are being taken advantage of. I'm sure every elder in the church can tell horror stories about moving so I'll just share one. I had to move a single sister once, which by itself is a worthy cause. The problem was her 26 year old fatty of a son sat on his wide can watching TV while we moved everything in. It's times like that where you become a little less careful about not scratching furniture, you know what I mean?"

In order to ensure that only those with a true need get moving help President Scott will introduce legislation in ward council this Sunday. Typically EQ presidents wait until they are in office for at least a year before introducing bills but President Scott feels urgency trumps procedure in this case.

"I think I have the votes to pass this. I have a friend on the welfare and service committee who is going to sponsor this. I'm optimistic."

If passed the bill would prevent individuals or families without a true need from obtaining the services of the EQ moving company. We obtained an advanced copy of the bill, the highlights of which are below:

  • Those with a net income of more than $100,000 ($250,000 for families) will be ineligible for service;
  • If the house you are moving into is worth more than $300,000 you are ineligible. Exceptions made for polygamous or otherwise large families;
  • Those with more than two male children over the age of 13 will not qualify;
  • Anyone who has not attended church at least 30 times in the last calendar year is ineligible;
  • Any individual or family with a piano or gun safe shall be ineligible.

If passed the bill would go into effect the first Saturday of next month. The full text of the bill can be found here.
