Laramie - A LaDaSa stake in Laramie, WY has decided to change the name of the annual Pinewood derby to 'Dad Wiener Measuring Contest'. Scout leader Richard Johnson says the decision was inevitable. "For the past 10 years the cars have gotten more and more elaborate while the boy scouts' actual involvement in making the cars has lessened," he says. "It's really turned into a yearly contest of the fathers trying to outdo one another. They wouldn't dream of showing up with a car their kid had made on their own".
We asked one father, Phil Williams, his thoughts on the change. "It's about time they got around to doing this. Let's call it what it is. Heck, I remember a few years ago we had a new guy move into the stake, Bronson I think his name was. He didn't know the score so he let his kid make his own car. Nice kid, but talk about a turd of a car. It broke his heart to see our cars stomp all over his. It was like he brought the homely girl to prom and we all had brought Lynda Carter, you know what I mean?"
Other folks were less enthusiastic about the name change. Janice Dooley has three kids in scouts and she's upset. "Are we really going to put the word 'wiener' on the banner that hangs in the cultural hall? I don't think that's appropriate," she said. "I honestly don't mind that the fathers do much of the work. Between you and me, I'm glad when the derby rolls around. It's good for my husband. He's not real skilled at a lot of stuff so this gives him a chance to display his wares so to speak."
We tried reaching the regional BSA office to get their comment on this situation but our faxes were not returned.
